A question that is commonly asked by people who have never chartered before is, “Am I qualified to bareboat?

In terms of qualifying, there is no particular licensing or certification required to bareboat charter in the Caribbean. What the charter companies primarily look for is skippering experience on a boat similar in size to the one you are chartering. A “bareboat certification” or “live-aboard cruising” course by ASA or other credible standard, is valuable, but without additional skippering experience, is not normally sufficient qualification. Prior “bareboat” experience is good. If you have a reference or documentation showing that you have “bare-boated” before, by all means include it.

If you would like to get a preliminary evaluation of your experience, please complete the form below and submit it to us. We can give you a good idea of the size boat you would be qualified to charter but of course each charter company has its own form for you to complete, and the charter company always has the final word on qualification.
